*feels really old and slightly pervy*

So I got the new issue of "Entertainment Weekly" in the mail today, and I feel I need to ask something...

    ahem )

Oh, and [info]strangefandom is back! It's a really fun comm where you volunteer to watch vids of fandoms you're not familiar with, and then try to figure out what the hell they're about. Sign-ups end tomorrow, so check it out if you're interested.

    randomness and picspam poll
    1. I'm feeling kind of down in the dumps because I auditioned for another community theater show -- a lead in a straight play, which I prefer to musicals -- and got totally rejected. Not even a callback. CLEARLY I SUCK. [/fish for sympathy more]

    2. Nothing in the world could get me to see "Transformers 2", but this is an especially hilarious review linked by [info]subtlemegan.

    3. Help me out, flist! I've never participated in [info]picspammy before, but this month is bringing out a ton of entries. The subject for July is "short form" -- including trailers, music videos, DVD extras, webisodes, and opening credit sequences. I have so many ideas! Would you be interested in any of them?

    Virtuality
This is a public service announcement that "Virtuality" is on Fox at 8:00 tonight. It's a two-hour "movie" that Fox bought as a potential pilot and... well, you know the story with Fox. I don't know if we are ever going to see this anywhere else again, but I have massive respect for the people involved, and I never get tired of weird naturalistic science fiction. It's kind of my thing.

Up until today the only thing I knew about this show/movie/whatever was huge uncomfortable spoiler alert ) and that there's a gay couple on it, so my feelings have been VERY mixed. But now that I know about the whole REALITY SHOW IN SPACE aspect, I think it has an awesome amount of potential that it will never get to reach, and that bums me out.

This should go without saying, but if your feeling is "LOL GOOD BECAUSE DAYBREAK SUCKED," just assume that you left it and I heard you, and move along.

For those who haven't already made it to the "vaguely annoyed, but completely over the whole thing" stage of the HBIC debacle, [info]prolix_allie has started her own HB(adass)IC nomination round in the same style, hopefully with less WTF results.

You know what to do, just make sure it's limited to (a) women and (b) fictional characters of TV/movies/comics/books/etc.

ETA: Just so you guys know, every single time I wrote the words "Adam Lambert" in the last couple of days, my fingers automatically typed "Adama Lambert". AS IF I NEEDED ANOTHER REASON to have a grudge with Adama.

WELL DAMMIT, remember back when I was defending the whole HBIC poll to the one or two people on my flist who thought it was offensive? Because regardless of the terminology, I love seeing all these strong, commanding female characters battle it out and be celebrated? And I've never really minded the whole "reclaim the word bitch" thing, especially in cases like this where its more aggressive definition (a woman who's stepped out of her 'place', rather than someone in submission) is worn as a mantle to be proud of?

It's moved past nomination time into the real poll. Who's in the massive, commanding, likely impossible-to-beat lead? People voting "Adam Lambert" for the lulz.

Oh, and from the person who started the poll, when asked why he was included amidst the other choices in the first place:

I think you can stil be a bitch and be a guy. Especially if you're gay.

    ...No words, you guys.

for those who enjoy BSG and my picspams
I did an extensive picspam and summary of the uber-fantastic episode "Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part 1" over at [info]bsg_refrak. I was kinda too tired after the screencap-making and Photoshopping to be funny or anything, but the episode rocks too hard anyway.

That's ONE thing off my list of fan-obligations! *grumbles nervously about that remix fic*

Edit: Oh DUH, I completely didn't talk about attending that "Cyborgs on the Horizon" event Friday with [info]prolix_allie, [info]dianora2, [info]nnaylime, [info]zinke, and [info]illogicalvulcan. There's not much I can say about it that wasn't already summarized or quoted here and here. But I will share a few random thoughts )

Edit again: Oh yeah, and we got a little scene from "The Plan", which was like A MOUNTAIN OF RETCON in 60 seconds, but when you get past that it wasn't bad or anything.

    biggest BSG icon dump ever
Uh, you'll understand if I keep my journal a light happy place and decide not to post about the really depressing stuff going on in the world, right? Good.

    1) "So You Think You Can Dance" results tonight -- look at the suspense I was in. v_v I predicted pretty early who was going home, so (luckily?) no surprises yet. Funny moment was when my mother briefly freaked out from downstairs because she thought person who got kicked off ) was my favorite ).

    2) I know everyone of my age group has linked or embedded this already, but -- Zack Morris interviewed by Jimmy Fallon. I spent about two minutes being extremely unsettled, and then I embraced the fantasticness of it. I love that they referenced the episode where he aced the SATs and got accepted to Stansbury. It's the Harvard of the west! *nostalgic giggle*

    3) Battlestar fandom has an unpopular opinion/anon meme going on, and my only comment on the fun-wanky-engrossing festivities is this:

To all the people out there who think it was Totally Unfair that Baltar and Six got a relatively sweet deal at the end, much to the delight of their literally TENS OF SHIPPERS, because this means eeevil goes unpunished and cream and bastards rise and this is why Roslin/Lee/etc. can't have nice things? (A) You fail at this show. (B) Your tears are delicious.

And with that, I have relinquished my right to take the fannish moral high ground on anything ever again. ;)

    4) I've been a ridiculously busy beaver when it comes to icons. Like, even the other beavers look at me and go, "Damn, man, when are you gonna take a sick day?" BUT. I finally got up the nerve to reapply to [info]good_galacticon, and I got accepted this time. Woohoo!

NO LIE, THERE ARE 113 ICONS UNDER THIS CUT )

I really need to branch out into other fandoms when it comes to making icons. I'm just so *stuck* in BSG right now though, since... well, I already know all the resources for screencaps, I have the quickest knowledge of how to find specific scenes/character shots I want, and so on. Maybe I should start taking multifandom requests or something. That could be fun.

4.5 deleted scenes! (No, not those, even more of them.)
Been meaning to post about this. Totally inconspicuous fandom faeries have put a bunch of BSG deleted scenes on YouTube. You may have already seen those.

BUT LOOK. LOOK WHAT I ALSO FOUND!!

Gaeta/Tigh in A Disquiet Follows My Soul

You guys. Mutiny!Felix was such a pimp. *draws hearts all around him*

Another one from Disquiet: Hi HeadSix with your crazy dress! Way to make that cult scene make *sense* and stuff.

And finally this -- right here at 2:15 -- might be the most hilariously brilliant Jamie Bamber line delivery ever. Wow. It takes skill to make "You are our allies" sound suspiciously like "I fantasize daily about pushing you creepy-ass robots off a cliff." You know when you really can't stand somebody, but your dad is friends with their dad? Poor Lee is in that exact situation WITH BONUS GENOCIDE. Ahahaha awwwwwww.

Hey, you guys like polls right?

(HBIC = Head Bitch In Charge)

Comment here to vote for Joan Holloway. I had to nominate her myself. WHERE IS THE LOVE?

And since you can comment for as many nominated women as you want, here's the Laura Roslin thread too. (As if she needs it.) Pretty much every HBIC from Battlestar is on there if you look, but I'm not sure any of them can make grown men and robots piss their pants and fall in line just with the tone of her voice. Also, none of them have ever used the phrase "toss a baby out an airlock" in an actual sentence.

P.S. Three things about the Tony Awards, which I watched for... maybe a half hour.

    1. My dad inexplicably declared that "Shrek: The Musical" is a good reason for people to hate New York. I feel it's a better reason for New York to hate everyone else. Or maybe a piece of evidence.

    2. I don't care how many corny scripted jokes Neil Patrick Harris delivers. The fact that he casually used the phrase "BTW" out loud while hosting an awards show makes me love him fifty times harder than ever, for some reason.

    3. I really want to go see "West Side Story".

Edit again: I almost forgot, shout-out to [info]wemblee for making this hilarious little advertisement for the should-be-a-cult-classic series "Swamp Thing" on DVD. It's just a special bonus that the video's default YouTube image is some guy rubbing his nipples.

    Spin around, ninjas!
You may remember a while ago I linked to some funny "literal versions" of music videos (Head Over Heels and Take On Me). It turns out other people have started using that premise to make their own literal videos. So now I present to you, my new favorite: Total Eclipse of the Heart. (Thanks to [info]irradiatedsoup for the link!)

Edited to add: I knew I forgot something. In case you haven't heard, there are rumors floating around of a remake of Buffy the Vampire Slayer from those who hold the original 1992 movie's rights. I'm *extremely* skeptical that it's going to happen at all, but it's pretty exciting for me to finally experience the "STAY OUT OF MY OLD-SCHOOL FANDOM, YOU MONSTERS, YOU DON'T ~UNDERSTAND~ IT" end of a remake controversy. I think they should change Buffy's gender, create a wacky time-travelling paradox where um, Star Trek spoiler ), and make Christian Bale do all the growly vampire voices.

Anyway, here's some meta about why this isn't the dumbest idea in the world by [info]prozacpark. I don't really agree with her, but it's an interesting perspective.

    In other news:

HOLY MOTHER OF GOD, JAMES. It's not 2000 anymore. Why must you do these things? Just... stop. I need to protect you from you.

(Um, can somebody call me around 11:00 tonight to make sure I haven't actually died laughing? Thanks.)

NO GAETASODES ON THE DVDS. WHAT. HOW AM I EVER SUPPOSED TO MAKE A GAETA VID WITHOUT THOSE. HOW CAN I NOT HAVE THEM FULL-SCREEN ON MY TV.

I guess it's not that important, because they only provide MASSIVE AND NECESSARY BACKSTORY TO HIS AWESOME 4.5 STORYLINE THAT IS CANON AND NECESSARY AND WHAT THE HELL YOU GUYS.

This is so ridiculously uncool, I don't know what to say. And I'm not even talking about the fact they're "gay-themed" (lmao, really? because of that one nanosecond kiss? I think "gay-themed" is giving them way too much credit, but whatever). There was non-kiss stuff that happened in those webisodes too! PLOT-AFFECTING STUFF. CHARACTER MOTIVATION STUFF.

In fact, you may call me Naive McPollyanna, but I don't even think HomoFail is the reason they were left off. I really believe it was a licensing or timing issue. Besides the lack of boys kissing each other, I can think of two differences between these webisodes and the ones that were included on the S3 disc:

    1. Season three happened before the writers' strike. And while the strike didn't succeed in its webisode goals for *everyone*, I'm sure it changed the way people dealt with them from the experimental free-for-all that was going on prior to the strike.
    2. "The Resistance" was produced during season three. Very early, alongside the New Caprica episodes. Gaeta's webisodes were filmed after the main series had wrapped, while they were shooting "The Plan".

Just two alternate theories to keep in mind. HOWEVER, if making a big LGBT stink about it brings more attention to the Grave Injustice that's been done to Gaeta fans and people who like continuity, then go for it. Because I'm pissed.

I'm just waiting to find out the DVDs feature an alternate cut of "Blood on the Scales" where Baltar accepts a firm, manly handshake from Gaeta and then leaves the room. I mean, if they really wanted to scale back on the gay theme.

taking a break from the hotness poll to ask...
Is it an overreaction to say I'm not sure I can watch "So You Think You Can Dance" this season, and my attitude toward the show was completely poisoned by the jaw-droppingly ignorant comments the judges made about the same-sex dance partners? Which Fox felt the need to devote nearly 10 minutes to, even though the guys didn't even advance to Vegas? Nigel's last joke about how they should try dancing with women and they "might like it" was especially cute.

Then again, it makes sense. When I think about blindingly heterosexual manly manliness, THIS IS THE SHOW I ALWAYS THINK ABOUT.

Fox's epic bullshit, and the Countdown to Final Hotness continues
I've been too saddened to comment about this on anybody's journal, but I am very angry at Fox right now for cancelling Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. I know it's all about money and networks don't go looking to destroy shows and blah blah, but NICOLE SMASH anyway!

As happy as I am for Dollhouse fans, I'm pretty pissed that a show that *just barely* found its footing storytelling-wise is being given another chance while the nearly flawless second season of Sarah Connor, with its finale that blew open a whole new world of potential, got the shaft. Better writing, better acting, better characters, YARRRGH. I know it's really unfair to put them in competition with each other like that, but it still feels really unfair and I need to vent. Don't worry, a few more posts about how this is a Killing Blow To Feminism and I'll go back to being a defensive Whedon fan soon.

Still. DIE, TV, DIE. I just lost Battlestar Galactica. How dare you take away my other show with badass, morally questionable mother figures and angsty manchildren and sexy robots who take care of them to the music of Bear McCreary? IT WASN'T TIME YET. *runs away crying*

    Countdown to Final Hotness!
This meme went around a week or two ago and now I want to play. Below is a list of 15 men and women that I currently find cute, sexy, or super-attractive. It's your job to vote them off Survivor-style and decide who is left standing on... let's call it Frak Island.

Getting piscpammy visual aids seemed... time-consuming, so I'm just gonna do that as they get voted off. Google Image Search is your friend, though!

PSA for those of you who make icons -- [info]bsg_pairicons is one of my favorite icon contests. Partially because it's rather small and I'm always winning shit. But it's also because it's devoted to multishipping, which is my favorite thing to do.

Anyway, the current challenge is due tomorrow night, and it seems like they're really hurting for entries. What's the theme? Well, it's probably some totally obscure, unpopular, non-canon couple of- OH WAIT, THE THEME IS KARA/LEE. What the hell? Consider this community pimped, and all of you with Photoshop, some time to kill, and a passing knowledge of "Battlestar Galactica" have a homework assignment. *cough*
